Same Business Strategy, Different Results: Why Strategy Alone Isn’t Enough

Have you ever watched another business owner use the exact same strategy you’re using and get completely different results? Same program, same funnel, same sales script. They hit their numbers. You end up somewhere in the middle, with a whole lot of frustration.

I’ve been coaching business owners for over a decade, and for years that question bugged me. Why does one person get one result and another person gets a totally different result with the same strategy?

I finally found the answer, and it changed everything about how I coach. It’s also the reason we’ve rebranded the podcast and everything we do under one name: Success Rewired.

Every Strategy Works (Somewhere, for Someone)

Here’s something that might surprise you coming from a business coach: all strategies work. Somewhere along the line, a strategy worked for somebody. Because it worked, they told other people about it. Other people tried it, and for some of them it worked too. For others, it didn’t.

So I’m not throwing strategy out the window. Strategy is important and it’s necessary. What I am throwing out the window is the idea that the right strategy is going to solve all your problems. It isn’t.

If you’ve implemented strategy after strategy and you’re still not getting the result you want, I want you to hear this: you’re not crazy, you’re not broken, and you’re not flawed. The issue is deeper than strategy and tactics.

The Moment I Stopped Coaching Only Strategy

I started my first business when I was eight years old. My grandfather had a chiropractic office, and there was an apple tree outside with apples rotting on the ground. My little entrepreneurial brain said, “I’m going to make an apple stand.” I sold apples to his patients, and I still remember the feel of those shiny quarters in my hand.

Since then I’ve had a software company, a stint in corporate, a log home company that failed, and a role as president of a national women’s networking organization. Then I started my coaching practice. All of it gave me a deep knowledge base of strategy, tools, worksheets and how-tos.

Last year I led one of our retreats in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We were in a beautiful log cabin in Custer State Park, sitting by a big stone fireplace, with buffalo grazing just outside the window. On the last day, everyone was sharing their breakthroughs. As I watched them, I felt a calling in my own heart: I had always wanted to coach at a much deeper level.

I had woven deeper work into my coaching for years, but I had never put a stake in the ground, because of fear. I worried business owners wouldn’t want to work with a business coach who wasn’t only focused on strategy. Sitting in that cabin, I knew it was time to step out of the fear and become the coach I’m meant to be.

Why the Same Strategy Gets Different Results

When the tried and true isn’t working (the habits, the mindset work, the willpower), it’s because of what’s happening in your nervous system.

Early in life, your nervous system learned how to keep you safe. I call these safety rules. They can sound like:

  • “I have to work hard for money.”
  • “It’s important for me to put everybody else first and myself last.”

These rules run completely without your notice. You decide you’re going to hit a goal, and then your behavior doesn’t line up. You keep doing the very things that pull you away from it. That’s the mismatch between your thinking mind and your body, where your nervous system lives. It can feel like a war within: your mind says, “Here’s where we’re going,” and your behavior does something completely different.

So two business owners can run the same strategy. One has safety rules that support it. The other has safety rules that quietly work against it. Same strategy, different results.

If you want to go deeper on this, read why your nervous system is the root of every business problem.

Why Pushing Harder Makes It Worse

Working with your nervous system is the opposite of almost everything we’re trained to do as business owners and high performers. We force, push and drive our way through.

When you put force and pressure on your nervous system, it reads that as a threat. Your nervous system is designed to win, so it digs in deeper. That’s why the harder you push, the more stuck you can feel.

This is coaching, not therapy. Yes, safety rules are rooted in childhood, and no, we’re not going to sit and talk about every childhood memory. I love therapy and I’ve used it. In coaching, we’re after results, and we want them as quickly as we can get them. We map what isn’t working in your strategy, your business or your life back to the specific safety rule underneath it, and then we rewire it.

What Rewiring at the Root Looks Like

When you rewire a safety rule at the root, all that forcing goes away. You’re not white-knuckling a new habit, slipping back into your old ways a few weeks later, and then judging and shaming yourself.

Change from deep within is quiet, and it lasts, because what’s really shifting is your identity. Identity isn’t your personality or your traits. It’s who you become and how you behave under pressure. As your identity shifts, you just behave differently. You wake up and think, “I think I’m going to do that today,” and it feels aligned and easy.

This work does ask something of you. It takes patience, quiet, calm and gentleness. For many of us, even slowing down can feel like the world is ending. That’s why courage matters so much here: the courage to slow down, to look inside, and to sit with an emotion long enough to process it. There are gifts in fear, pain and even anger, and you only get access to them by walking through them.

You’ll see the same pattern show up in your money and your calendar. My posts on money blocks in business and time management for business owners walk through how.

Success Without the Suffering

As a high achiever, I was trained to believe burnout and sacrifice are just the cost of success. They don’t have to be.

That’s what Success Rewired is about. It’s having all the success you’ve been working so hard for, without the suffering that so often comes with being a high achiever. We get there by understanding your nervous system and rewiring the safety rules it learned early on, in a way that’s gentle, calm and loving.

When I first started doing this work myself, the idea that I had to slow down and be gentle felt like a breath of fresh air. It was such a relief from the hard, fast, driven way I had been running my business and my life.

The podcast is now Success Rewired: The Podcast. It’s still the same great content, and we’re going deeper into the tools, stories and conversations around nervous system work. You can listen to the full episode, “Same Business Strategy. Different Results. Here’s Why,” wherever you get your podcasts.

If you’ve tried strategy after strategy and you’re ready to solve the problem at the source instead of putting band-aids on the symptoms, I’d love to talk with you. This isn’t a high-pressure sales conversation. It’s a real conversation with one of our senior coaches about where you are, where you’re stuck, and how to free yourself from it.
