In this episode, Jennifer sits down with Ellen Goldman, a nationally board-certified health and wellness coach, to uncover why business success starts with personal well-being. Ellen introduces her MAP framework, Mindset, Awareness, and Preparation, as a sustainable path to healthy habits that actually stick. She explains how burnout, poor sleep, and unmanaged stress sabotage both weight loss and productivity. By shifting your mindset and starting with small, consistent actions, you can regain energy, clarity, and focus. This episode reframes self-care as a business strategy, not a luxury. This powerful conversation is a must-listen for any business owner ready to thrive in life and work.

Hey, hey, everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Happy Productive Podcast. I’m so excited for you guys to meet my friend Ellen Goldman, Ellen, welcome to the show today.
Ellen: Oh, hi, Jennifer. I’m so excited to be here with you.
Jennifer: Yes, you know, Ellen and I have been connected for many, many years. We were catching up and we’re like, hey, I think it’s been like five years since we talked. I’m like, what? How in the world has that much time like flown by? But you know, time really does fly. It’s just crazy.
Ellen: Yes. And you have to remember, we had this little time warp in between a couple of years where everybody was sort of out there in the world, not knowing what day it was or what year it was.
Jennifer: That’s right. We can’t forget about that for sure. Well, Ellen, I’d love for you to just share a little bit of your story and your background. Tell everybody who you are, where you came from and how you came about to be doing the amazing work that we’re going to dive into today.
Ellen: Absolutely. Well, thank you. Thanks for giving me the chance to do that. And I just want to say how excited I am because I’ve been loving listening to your podcast. You’re my new walking buddy. I so often have your podcast in my ears when I’m out there doing my morning walk with the doggy. So yeah, you know, just and I feel honored. You’ve had so many wonderful guests here and I feel great to be now included as one of them.
So, thank you again. So, my journey is a long one. We don’t want to spend the entire time talking about it, but I have been in the health and wellness industry now my entire adult career life and although as a, as a young college student, I never had any idea where I was going to end up. I always knew that it was going to be somewhere in health and wellness. And I think a lot of that stems from my history growing up with two wonderful, wonderful parents, but very different parents when it came to health and wellbeing.
My dad who worked really, really hard, you know, we, we were a, a family of five, three kids and the mom and dad and, um, small apartment, no real help outside of just the parental roles that they were playing. And they both worked really hard. Dad worked several jobs when we were little mom worked.
When dad got home, mom went out the door, you know, just to make it go. But it was really interesting as I was growing up because dad was my active play partner. When dad was home, you know, we were on the tennis courts, we were ice skating, we were swimming, we were active together and just really enjoying that very physical downtime and my brother and sister as well.
Whereas mom was the caregiver of everybody and everything. And so if she wasn’t working, she was working on the family and she was taking care of everybody but herself. From the moment we were young enough, sorry, old enough to, to come home from school, mom transferred to full-time work and she had a heart of gold and she was a fabulous lady who gave to everybody but really neglected herself and over the years that resulted in a lot of challenges If she were here today and I would say, mom, what was the biggest health challenge you had? She would absolutely say it was my weight.
She went from a gorgeously thin, lean, strong, athletic young woman to a very overweight, middle-aged woman, back pain, arthritis, later on some blood pressure, cholesterol problems, a lot of medical stuff that really was the result of not taking good care of herself, taking care of everybody else and I saw this balance of dad was working just as hard, but somehow, you know, yes, it was a very different time.
Men got to walk out the door a lot easier than women. You know, dad said, I’m going to play tennis every Sunday. Nobody blinked an eye about it, that mom was preparing meals for the rest of the week. It was a different time. But something about that contrast really played to me. And as I grew up, I really began to really hurt for my mom. So much of her weight loss struggles impacted everything. It impacted her happiness.
It impacted her mood. You know, she was frustrated. Sometimes she was down and outright angry, trying to balance it all and just not feeling good in her body and feeling as if there was something wrong with her and I don’t know, sometimes I just said, there’s got to be a different way.
There has to be a way to not have all of the struggles to be a great working person, be a person out there who cares and loves and gives to their families. But it shouldn’t mean you have to sacrifice your own health and wellbeing. And that seed just planted in me and said, I’m going to figure it out. I am going to figure out because I knew I wanted to be a working mom. I knew I was going to work.
I didn’t know back then that I would be a business owner, but I knew that I would be a working mom and I didn’t want to have to sacrifice one for the other, you know? So that I think was really the seed of it. And I just went on this journey to not just educate myself around the science of health and weight loss and longevity, but more the whole lifestyle. How do I educate myself and figure out how do you live the lifestyle that really allows you to thrive both personally and professionally? I really believe that we should not be sacrificing one for the other.
Jennifer: Yeah. I agree so much. And that being said, I know there’s a lot of people listening to this right now going, Oh, I agree. I agree. I agree. And then going right back to working, working, working and I am not innocent of this. I’m really not.
We’re getting ready to leave on a trip and I’ve been working nonstop for the last probably 10 days. And even then I was just like, you know what? I try not, I really don’t work on weekends, but I’m like, I’m working the weekend because we’re getting ready to go and so I’m tired and I feel it and I know that, and I’ve been through rounds of this in my business where it’s just like, you just go and go and go until you burn yourself out. And so let’s talk a little bit about the, I don’t know if it’s the logistics or the, but like the how to write, how do we go from, it’s easy to say, Oh, you need to take care of yourself. And I think we all know this, but like
Ellen: intellectually we have more information than we need.
Jennifer: That’s it. Intellectually we know, but how do we go to actually feeling it and doing it and being okay with it in our day-to-day lives? So like, how do you help people like transition? Because there’s so many reasons, right. That we can say as a business owner, all these people are depending on me, blah, blah, blah, all my clients, blah, you know, and there’s, and there are legitimate reasons. I’m not saying
Ellen: Absolutely. We are the, we are the CEOs, the chief, everything offices,
Jenifer: officers. YES exactly
Ellen: I don’t care if you’re a solopreneur or you’ve got a team at the end of the day, we are responsible for everything. And when that happens, it’s very hard to draw boundaries around our time because there’s always something we can do. Every single business owner I have ever met could work 24 seven. If they allow themselves, I have never met one.
I go, I’ve gone to hundreds of business meetings, conferences, networking, never has a business owner come up and started chatting and say, you know, I am just completely caught up. I have nothing to do. I’m taking the next five hours to like, go to a spa and have a massage. I mean, no,
Jennifer: I know, I know.
Ellen: There’s never, yeah,
Jennifer: no, you’re never caught up. And literally, I’ll be waiting for a client on zoom and I’m like, they’re not there. I’m like, Oh, I’ve probably got 30 seconds. Let me see if I can shoot off an email. Like, that’s it. You know, we’re just always like, Oh, I have two minutes. I bet I could get this done and you’re right. We could, I, and I truly could work like round the clock all the time. I love my business. I love what I do. Yeah. And until you’re burned out and you’re like, then you start, you know, going, how is this, how is this misery going to ever end? Right.
Ellen: Yes. Yes. You know, I, I, I consider myself in the business of burnout prevention and I, and I don’t want to, I really want to get back to that question you asked me because we are living in a time and, and my industry is, is guilty of it. We’re living in a time where we have more knowledge and education and information around how to live a healthy life, how to prolong life, what we should be doing to stay well, how to fight off chronic diseases, how to delay dementia, possibly even prevent things like Alzheimer’s.
The information is out there. What we do not know how to do is behavior change. We don’t know how to change our behavior. You know, that is really what coaching is all about. It is the psychology of behavioral change. When it comes to health and wellbeing, you really, the biggest problem is that people want to go, okay, they get this spurt of motivation or a scare, maybe, maybe they go to the doctor and the doctor says to them, you know, you’re this close away from being diabetic. And if you don’t get this under control, you’re going to have to start taking it. And they freak out for a minute and they’re going to like, I’m going to get into action and they think that they’re going to overhaul their entire life.
You know, they’re going to change the way they eat. They’re going to change the way they exercise. They’re going to change everything. They go from the thought I want to change into action. It’s a recipe for failure because what they have to do is start with mindset.
That is the first thing that has to change is the way you approach. In my approach with my individual clients, they don’t even know I’m doing it, but this is kind of the process they go through. It’s spelled out pretty clearly in my online weight loss course, which is the road map, M-A-P.
The map, M stands for mindset and motivation. You have to spend time doing the work first. Mindset is to give you an example. There’s a lot that goes into it, but to give you an example, I don’t have time for self-care. Fill in the blank. I don’t have time to exercise.
I don’t have time to cook a healthy meal. I don’t have time for sleep. I don’t have time to take off and relax. I don’t have time for self-care. Must change to, I make time for self-care. You have to change the mindset from self-care is a luxury to self-care is essential. It’s not a choice. It’s the number one priority. Our health is our most important asset. When we talk about assets for our business, we think about the bottom line. What are we worth? But the truth of the matter is, if your health is not there, your business falls apart. There ain’t no business if you’re not well.
So truthfully, you’ve got to change your mind to recognize that my biggest business responsibility is taking care of myself so that I have the health and wellbeing, which to me equates to energy. If we don’t have energy, we can’t get done what we need to do. Everybody’s out there talking about time management. Yeah, well, you know what? It’s energy management. You want to live an extraordinary life. You want to grow an extraordinary business.
You have to manage your energy. You can have the best time management skills under the sun, but if you do not have the energy to execute them, nothing changes and you can’t have that energy if self-care is not first.
So you’ve got to do the work to really begin to understand that and embrace that and sometimes it’s a leap of faith because if you’ve never done it, if you have never really put self-care first, it’s kind of like you don’t know what you’re missing. You don’t know how you will feel. You don’t recognize that, boy, if I actually eat a healthy breakfast and do my workout first, I will be so much more efficient and get more done than, I don’t have time to do this.
I can’t eat breakfast. I got to return those emails that I didn’t get to yesterday, but what happens is as the day goes on, the energy is draining. We only have a certain amount. When you start trying to run on empty, which is what happens if self-care isn’t first, efficiency goes down, mistakes go up. You end up having to redo work that wasn’t done well.
You begin to send the wrong email to the, send the email off to the wrong person or you literally just, what’s wrong with me that I just can’t get this work done? You’re trying to run on empty. So it starts with that mindset and beginning to do some work to understand on that. And of course that’s where coaches really can come in and help people examine it.
You know, when I pick any of the many of the umbrella of self-care, like let’s say exercise, and I’ll say to somebody, you know, I want you to just like close your eyes. And I want you to tell me when you think about including exercise into your life on a daily basis, what comes up for you, most of the time, it’s a very negative feeling. I’ll never be able to do it.
I don’t have time to do it. It’s been so long that I’ll probably hurt myself. I mean, there’s a lot of negative messages that come up with this stuff. You know, what we tell ourselves is what we get. The voice is ours. We have to learn to change it.
So doing this mindset work is the foundation that you have to start with before you change the actual behavior. And then we move on to motivation and you’ve got to figure out what is the actual motivator that becomes the non-negotiable. And the only way that that happens is it has to connect with your values. So, everybody says, Oh, you know, I really value being healthy. But are you living the lifestyle that supports that? Yeah. You know, right.
So, this mindset and motivation piece is really pretty essential. And you know, if those that are listening today, if they do nothing else, I would just take 10 minutes a day to think about that. You know, why do I actually want to become healthier and not the, well, you know, I want to live longer. Well, why is that important to you? Yeah. You know, well, you know, I want to live longer because I want to watch my kids walk down the aisle. Well, why is that important to you? You know, it’s, I call it peeling the onion.
Jennifer: Yeah.
Ellen: You know, when it comes to weight loss, you know, most of the time you ask somebody, so why is it important? You know, I want to be comfortable in my body. Well, why? Why is it important to you to be comfortable in your body? Well, when I’m not comfortable in my body, what, well, I kind of like, I don’t feel as confident. Why is it important to feel confident? Well, when I’m not as confident, I don’t take the risk that I do. And it starts to get down to this piece of weight.
That’s why and when you can connect to what your core motivator is, and that becomes the primary driver and you find the ways to keep that in your mind every single day, then it’s time to move on. Now I really encourage people to find visual reminders of their wives. Okay.
So, to give you an example of what that is. So, I’ve got two visual reminders right here in my office. I’ve got a picture of my husband and I from a hiking trip a couple of years ago at the top of a mountain in Colorado and I look at that and I say, I never want to not be able to climb a mountain. I may go a little slower, but I never want to not be able to climb a mountain. Okay.
Get off your butt and go do your workout. So, once you get the mindset and the motivation connected, then it’s time to start figuring out, okay, so what is the plan that’s going to work for me? So, the A in the map is first awareness.
You got to step back and watch your habits. What are my habits? Because turn the flashlight onto my habits. If you’re in the habit of sleeping for five hours a night, that’s a habit that maybe needs to be looked at first. If you’re in the habit of I’m procrastinating, you’re typical entrepreneur. I really don’t want to deal with this. This is so hard. I don’t even know where to begin.
I will do it tomorrow. Well, maybe I’ll do it in a few minutes and I work from home, so I’ll just wander into my kitchen and I’ll sit with my hands in the potato chips and think about how am I going to get this project started? So, you’re not getting anything done, but when you step back from that, it’s like, oh, I didn’t have time for lunch, but now my hand is in the potato chips.
So, when you start to look and you become aware of your habits, then it’s time to figure out, oh, so really what’s the first action that I need to start focusing on? Is it I’m not eating properly? Is it I’m not sleeping properly? Is it I’m not working out? Is it that I’m not communicating well with people around me? I’m not delicate.
You’ve got to watch your habits, become aware of them, and then you make a decision. What’s my number one action? Just one, one piece. And then you step into the P, which is the preparation and the planning. If you don’t plan for it, you don’t get done. If you don’t get the food in the healthy food in the house, it’s not there to eat. So preparation and planning and from there, it starts to, again, with one piece at a time, work on one action. When that feels habitual, you move on to the next one.
Jennifer: Yeah. Yeah. I love this. So, so good and you know what? Because we are business owners, we are entrepreneurs, like literally our lives revolve around solving problems. I mean, right. That’s what a business owner does.
Like we are experts at solving problems. And if we can start to put the power of our mind towards solving our own problem for ourselves, it’s truly amazing what we can actually do. It’s interesting because I have a client and he has a walking desk and I’m like, what’s a walking desk? And it’s basically a standing desk with a walking pad underneath it, a little mini treadmill and he would show up to our coaching calls and he’s walking while we’re talking. And I’m like, this is brilliant. I’m like, I didn’t even know people have told me for years, get a standing desk and I, it just didn’t really work that good for me. And, and I can’t do it all day long, but I’m like, wait a second, even one hour of the day, if I could walk because I’m on the phone all day long as a coach. Right.
And I know there’s a lot of people with virtual jobs now, there’s so much, you know, so much virtual stuff. And we’re like, really, and truly like, I’m just, I’m at my desk for long hours and it is what it is. But it’s just like, I used to use that as a reason why I couldn’t exercise and I’m like, this is baloney and he inspired me. And I have a walking desk now. And it’s funny.
I had my call with, I had a call with him today and I can’t do this for every client, but for him I can. And I look forward to that call because he’s walking and I’m walking. And my goal is 10,000 steps a day and I got 5,000 steps in just on my hour-long call, right, right in the middle of the work day. And so I only share that because we can be creative. We can come up with ways, right? Now I can’t do it every, like for podcast recordings, I’m going to sit for those.
But there are certain clients where it’s like, yeah, like we can both, we can walk and we can talk and I’m getting that movement in. And then that inspired me to get, I have two 15 pound weights. And so in between my coaching calls, I always take a bathroom break.
And so now I just, I call it strength and stretching. And so I’ll do 10 reps of something and a little stretch and in between each coaching call. And I added it up and I was like, wait a second, even in a long day, I’m getting 40, 50, 60 reps and I don’t like strength training, even though I know it’s necessary, but I’m getting all these reps in and I’m getting my steps in, in the, in my work day. And I’m like, wow, when I quit the day now, like my exercise is done and I’m free and I love it.
Ellen: So Jennifer, I love what you’re saying because you’re touching on two really important factors in this. How do we do this routine?
Jennifer: Right.
Ellen: Two things that you said here that I think is so important to highlight for our listeners. The first one is talking about using your strengths to solve problems.
Jennifer: Yes.
Ellen: And we, you know, as entrepreneurs, that is our (23:47) strength. We have certain ways, you know, and when, when you start to think about, okay, so if I look at this problem, I don’t have time for self-care. I think this is a problem. Okay. So, you know, me personally, what’s some of my best strengths? I know two of my best strengths is time management and organization.
So, I manage my time around self-care. I mean, if you saw my calendar, you’d be cracking up because even at this stage, when all this is habitual for me, because I’ve been doing it for so many years, lunch is still on my calendar. My workouts are still in my calendar.
Afternoons off are still on my calendar, you know, because I think time off is super important as well. So, this thinking about, you know, what am I good at and how can I use that to help me? The other piece that’s so important is everybody is individual and unique. What works for you may not work for me, may not work for the others.
This is why I hate the whole diet industry, this whole idea that just pick a diet and follow it. It does not work. Why? Because there is no one size fits all and it’s not just about the food. It’s a huge picture that it’s everything fits together. So, figuring out what’s going to work for you, you know, so taking a break every five minutes, I mean, a teachy step that everybody can do and it works on so many levels. It works on stress management. It works on getting more steps in and everything else is set a timer, 55 minutes and when that timer goes off, take a break. Take five minutes. You know, I live in a house with stairs.
I walk downstairs. I refill the water jug. I walk around maybe I let the dog out. I come out. Not only am I exercising my body, I’m exercising my brain and, you know, we know from brain research now how important little breaks like that and exercise are to keeping our brain functioning. And let me tell you, if you want to maintain being an entrepreneur, you’ve got to have your brain functioning pretty well. You’ve got to be able to turn on the executive function, that one that figures out all those problems. And what we know is when self-care slips, the emotional part of our brain lights up instead. So now you’ve got your emotions running your bus instead of your cognitive brain. Not good for anybody, but definitely not good for an entrepreneur.
I think entrepreneurs also face a very unique situation in that when I ask most of my clients, who are also primarily business professionals, CEOs, entrepreneurs, you know, why did you go into business for yourself? One of the number one reasons is I wanted to be in charge of my time. And what happens? Instead of creating a business that fits into the lifestyle they want, they create a business and try and figure out a lifestyle that can manage that business. And so instead of having more freedom, they have less freedom.
Jennifer: Right. It’s so funny. I just recorded another show earlier this morning and that’s what we were talking about is designing your life and not like making your life fit within your business, but really designing the life that you want and then having your business fit within that and it just goes hand in hand with that, like, so, so powerful. All right, Ellen, we’re almost out of time.
But I want you to talk a little bit about your course, because the course that you have were around weight loss without going on a diet. I know there’s a lot of people right now that are like, ears just ears just went up of like, wait, what, what are you talking about? So, tell us a little bit about that work that you do of helping people, especially entrepreneurs, you know, lose the weight, but do it without going on a diet.
Ellen: Right. So basically, what I do in this course, I created this course, because well, first of all, not everybody can afford to work with a coach one on one. And there’s although, you know, personal coaching is unique, and we can really get really deep into your unique needs.
What I saw after years and years of years of, you know, working with business professionals and entrepreneurs is that the basis is the same in terms of this process is going through the mindset, going through the motivation, figuring out and becoming aware of your habits and, you know, what’s the first action, learning how to prepare and set your environment up for success, and then begun the planning that leads to actual behavioral change. The exercises are really the same, the answers are different, everybody’s answer different, but the exercises are the same and what’s really interesting is it doesn’t even have to just be for weight loss.
I mean, the course is geared around weight loss. And there’s a lot of education around, you know, healthy lifestyle, you know, but I built it so that people could get off this idea that dieting is the answer. It is not. That’s what I watched. And it hurt my heart. My mom on and off diets, you know, and they’re not sustainable. Going on a diet is like getting a gouge in your arm that needs stitches. And instead of going and getting stitches, you put a band aid on it.
Jennifer: Yeah,
Ellen: it’ll work for a while, some of the pain will go away. It will not hurt as much. You may even think it’s starting to heal. But it’s not getting to the root problem.
Weight loss is the same. Weight loss is not a problem that is just what you put in your mouth or the lack of exercise. Weight loss is the result of a lifestyle that’s out of whack. You’ve got to correct the lifestyle. And then the weight can kind of take care of itself.
Jennifer: Nice.
Ellen: And so that’s what the course is really about and it’s, it’s a six-week course, although it’s self-study, you know, some people go through it faster. Some people take long, but it’s, it’s based on, you know, here’s the information.
Now here’s the exercise and I take people through, you know, the motivational piece, you know, there’s, there’s an exercise in there are 15 reasons you want to lose weight. And this is another fun thing that everybody can do. If that, if weight loss or any, any behavioral change you want, you know, I want to do this because, and just brain dump.
Number one, I want to look good at my bathing suit this summer. And then ashes, you know, just first, the first few were easy. Yeah, and then it’s like, wait, you want 15 reasons? Yeah. So, those are the kind of exercises that are in this. And it just walks people through this. Let’s figure out what will work for you.
Jennifer: Right.
Ellen: Because everybody’s answers are going to be unique. Everybody’s tastes are different. Everybody’s desire and ability to, to exercise, you know, what I’m going to do. You know, I love hopping on my Peloton.
Somebody else is going to say, you know, but it doesn’t matter. You know, there is no such thing as the greatest exercises, the one you’ll do. So that’s what this course really does is it takes you through the process of figuring out the lifestyle that will work for you within your unique situation and then really teaching you how to prepare plan and execute what you decide are your first steps.
Jennifer: I love it. So good. So good, Ellen. Thank you so much. This is such terrific information and I know that there are people right now listening to this that are getting like super motivated to do this, to take a big step towards their own self-care or maybe even the self-care they’re doing right now to increase it even further, because you’re right. It is so very, very important. And I, I believe in it, right? I see the difference.
I did all the years of just never taking care of myself. And then, and now, well, I’m not perfect. It feels so good now to just be like, you know what, I’m going for my morning walk. I don’t care. I’m doing it and it just changes the whole day. And then on days like this morning, when I didn’t have, I started early, it was like, great, I’m going to go on my morning walk on my walking desk with my client this morning and so there are ways to get this stuff in and make it fit.
You really, really can. If you apply yourself and you get creative, there are absolutely ways to fit it into your life. So really amazing. Ellen, will you tell everybody where can they find you if they want more information?
Ellen: Absolutely. Well, because they could go to my website, which is www.ellengcoaching.com. Lots of great information there. You know, weight loss is just one tiny little piece.
There’s a ton of blog posts. There’s free reports. One of my favorite giveaways at the website is one of the biggest questions that people say is, I don’t know where to start. You know, I’ve kind of been neglecting a lot and I don’t know where to start. Take my energy management assessments. It’ll pretty much hone in on where’s the first place that you need to start working on to fill your tank.
There’s certainly information there about the course. I also have a book, Mastering the Inner Game of Weight Loss. It’s actually a workbook. So, that, you know, for people that love that kind of thing, where it’s, there’s actually 52 tips and then work exercises afterwards where you can start figuring out like, oh, where would I do this? Or what works for me? Very individualized. So, certainly, lots and lots of stuff at my website, www.ellengcoaching.com. I can be reached by email, Ellen at ellengcoaching.com. And I love hearing from the community. I mean, that’s why I’m here.
I’m just here to serve. I answer every single email I get. Maybe not immediately because I’m very balanced with my time, but I answer every email I get and if I don’t have the answer, I usually know where I can send somebody to get those answers. And yeah, I would just, you know, love to hear from our listeners today. What resonated with you? You know, where is your first start going to be? But again, begin with that mind shift.
Jennifer: Yeah. Oh, I love it. So powerful. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Terrific information. Thank you for being here with me today, Ellen I really appreciate it.
