You ever catch yourself thinking, “Why can’t my team just think like me?”
If you’re nodding… you’re not alone.
This is one of the most common (and understandable) frustrations I hear from business owners. You’re juggling a million things, and it feels like the only person who really gets the urgency, the vision, and the standard is… you.
But here’s the hard truth: If your team thought exactly like you, they wouldn’t be working for you.
They’d be building their own thing.
And as much as we sometimes crave that “mini-me” energy in a high-stakes moment, you actually don’t want a team full of you.
Why? Because building a business that lasts—and doesn’t make you lose your mind—requires diversity of strengths, not duplication of personality.
Most entrepreneurs are Visionaries. Big picture thinkers. Fast starters. Ideas people.
Visionaries are great at seeing where the business needs to go—but not always great at building the systems or team dynamics to get there.
That’s where the magic happens when you stop trying to clone yourself and start building a team that complements you.
One of the most powerful tools I use with my team and in my coaching is a framework called Predictable Success, developed by Les McKeown. It breaks down four primary leadership styles you need on a healthy, high-functioning team:
Visionary – Big ideas, fast pace, passion-driven
Operator – Action-oriented, gets stuff done, doesn’t overthink
Processor – Loves structure, systems, and doing things “the right way”
Synergist – Relationship-focused, sees how the whole team fits together
Most business owners are Visionaries, often supported by one Operator who helps them implement. But that’s not enough to build something scalable.
Here’s why each role matters:
Visionaries set the direction—but can be scattered without support.
Operators keep things moving—but can burn out or bulldoze if not guided.
Processors bring order—but need clarity and trust to thrive.
Synergists hold the team together—but need space to connect and reflect.
When you understand who’s who on your team, you can stop asking them to be what they’re not—and start helping them succeed by being more of who they are.
You don’t need to micromanage your team. You need to define success—clearly.
That means:
Outlining what a win looks like
Giving context so people know why it matters
Inviting input on how to get there (based on their strengths)
Holding space for collaboration, not just instruction
Most leadership friction comes from misalignment—not from malice, laziness, or lack of talent.
The more clearly you can paint the target and coach your team to hit it in their way, the more ownership, creativity, and initiative you unlock.
Trying to force your team to “just think like you” is like yelling at a fish to climb a tree.
Instead, try asking:
“What part of this task feels unclear?”
“How would you approach this, based on your strengths?”
“Where do you need more direction or freedom?”
That’s leadership. Not control. Not frustration. Coaching.
If your team always feels like they’re disappointing you—or like they can’t win no matter how hard they try—eventually they stop trying.
The goal isn’t to make them more like you. It’s to help them be the best version of themselves in service of a shared goal.
And when you do that?
The whole team gets stronger.
You get to stop playing cleanup crew.
your business finally starts to run like the machine you dreamed it could be.
Reflection Questions:
Who on your team are you secretly expecting to “think like you”?
What strengths are you underutilizing or misunderstanding?
How might your leadership shift if you focused on coaching instead of correcting?
